Ms. Wilfriede and Ms. Pam's Bald Eagle News

Dear Bald Eagle parents,

This month we learned about:

Geography-History

George Washington
Abraham Lincoln
The American Flag
The conflict between the Northern and Southern States.
The Pledge of Allegiance
Set up matching exercise: mat with pictures of presidents and figurines in historic dress to match.

Music-

We sang these Patriotic songs:
America the Beautiful
God bless America
Many Flags in Many Lands
My Country T’is of Thee
An Irish Lullabye
German Lullabye:Guten Abend, gut Nacht

Math

Clock, full hour and half past.
The VPK students continue to work on chain counting and skip counting.
Polygons:  the children learned about the pentagon, hexagon, septagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, the VPK children drew these shapes and labeled them.

Language

Children continue to work at their own level of ability on writing of sounds, words and stories

Science

Science experiment, observation of our “egg men”

Four egg shells, with the top cut off and filled with one cotton ball and alfalpha seeds on the top.

The egg men were marked 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Number 1 – cotton was kept wet and placed in a sunny spot.
Number 2 – cotton remained dry and placed in a sunny spot.
Number 3 – cotton was kept wet and placed in a dark location.
Number 4 – this egg man was submerged in water.

The Montessori Learning Environment

The children learned what condition was best for the growth of the seeds. (egg man’s hair)

We ordered top soil and plan to start our garden outside our classroom window in March.

Our jog-a-thon was so much fun!

We thank the parents who helped us as well as Ms. René for the delicious frozen fruit pop treat.

Love,
Ms. Wilfriede
Ms. Pam

Ms. Leanne and Ms. Gail’s Flamingo News

Hello to all of our wonderful Flamingo families,

During the month of March, the children are learning picture and word work plans these were introduced after the four day break to help the children reach their goals and structure their day in an independent way. The work plan will be explained in more details during the upcoming Dad and Mom’s nights.  We hope that everyone will attend.   Your child will also get the opportunity to show their best work and how the materials are used in their learning environment.

In Social Studies they will be focusing on the continent of Europe.  St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated on Monday, March 17th.  We will learn about the country of Ireland and share many interesting facts about other countries in Europe too.

Dr. Montessori, “You will never understand the child until one becomes childlike and without audacity.”

The children really are enjoying the exploration of the seven lands on our Earth and a few children are now writing sentences about each continent.  The children continue to expand on their abilities to build words, incorporated blends and some are reading up a storm.

Keep reading to your child and include them in finding sight words such as the, and, is, are, and we.  Math has so many levels, some children are mastering the identification of numbers, symbol to quantity, while others continue with bead work and others are multiplying.  Dr. Maria Montessori believed that if children could add 2+2 then they could also add 20+20, then 200+200, then 2,000+2,000.  The children are so enthusiastic working with the math materials.

In science, we continue to observe our tadpoles.  This lifecycle has been a long process.  Never in our teaching experience have we witnessed tadpoles who do not want to grow legs.  We had to move on to the next lifecycle which is the Butterfly.

The children have enjoyed making living and non-living collages and the next collage will be plants/animals.  In art the children will learn about the artist Pick Mondrian and his straight line by design with the primary colors.

Love,
Ms. Leanne
Ms. Gail

Island Village Summer Program

Ms. Leanne and Ms. Rene’ have been working together the past 6 years creating an inventive and exciting summer program.  We have many weekly visitors from the community; the children learn about many different cultures, countries, cook, create beautiful artwork and play many indoor and outdoor games.

A $30 application fee will secure your child in this fun filled summer program.  All preschool children and their siblings through 1st grade are invited to join us.  We provide different actives to the different age groups to ensure everyone’s enjoyment and ability.

A minimum of a two week commitment is required; camp will run for 8 weeks.  The camp day begins at 8:30-3 ($155 per wk) or half days 8:30-12 ($105per wk), Monday through Friday.  Camp starts June 9th.

Join us for great fun during the dog days of summer! Call today.

Reminders:

Sign up for the summer program

Re-enroll for the 2008-2009 school year.

Read with your child for at least one half hour each day.

Limit TV and computer viewing to less then 2 hours per day.

Our vegetable garden continues to produce delicious tomatoes, peppers and lettuce.  The carrots are also growing bigger by the week, thanks to our little green fingers and the love and attention that our garden gets.

“Child’s play is the child’s work…children who have been prevented from developing fully often show character traits that disappear when they become normalized through work.  In the normalized child his freedom to take interest in all kinds of things leads to his focusing his attention not on things themselves but on the knowledge he derives from them.” Maria Montessori-The Absorbent Mind
