"What is Montessori?"

Many of you visiting here for the first time or just getting started at our school may have a few questions about the Montessori philosophy or methods. A visit to the Montessori FAQ and the Montessori Concepts pages may be just what you are looking for.

Come Visit Us

Island Village Montessori is a wondrous experience for both the student and the family alike. If you are considering enrolling your child at IVMS, we invite you to visit us in person and experience all we have to offer in person. Directions and maps can be found on the How To Find Us page.

NEW SECURITY RULE

Starting on Monday, 04-14-08, any child that comes in late after 8:35am, must be accompanied by a parent. Parents must park their car in a parking space and then walk their child to sign in late and then must accompany the child to his or her learning environment.

When coming on campus throughout the school day, you must get a visitor’s pass in the office. This includes dropping off lunches or for any other reason. We thank you for your cooperation; it is for the safety of our students.

Congratulations to the entire south and north campus preschool staff.

What is Special About Island Village?

Kudos to our drama group and choir. The performance at Venice Little Theater was amazing. Especially so, considering the little performance time at the theater itself. This world-class performance was another example of how Montessori children develop self-expression as they work together as a community.

Our music and art departments are organizing Arts Days in May. IVMS will spend two days in celebration of the arts. Students will perform, display visual art, enjoy guest visits from local artists and performers, write, dance, and make arts and crafts. Arts Days are a special time to celebrate the arts as the school year winds down. IVMS also students attend art, music, and dance classes during the year, allowing for a balanced curriculum of academics and creativity.

In addition to our attention to the arts at IVMS, we also emphasize foreign language. Using live instruction plus the Rosetta Stone language software, our students study a foreign language of choice in the upper grades: Spanish, French, Latin, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Russian, German, and more. In the lower grades, we have certain classes where educators who are native speakers use Spanish everyday. At our north campus, we are lucky enough to have a majority of our staff who are bilingual in Spanish and English.

Finally, IVMS stresses the development of self-directed learners, from our early childhood program to our middle school. Students make choices and learn to manage their time starting with daily and weekly work plans. At the middle school level, the students must organize three-week contracts that are similar to college syllabi. The students are awarded the distinction of "Self-directed Learner" from the faculty as a recognition of mastery at this new level of responsibility and freedom.

Responsibility and the freedom to choose are two cornerstones of the Montessori system of education. This is what Dr. Montessori called "Education for Life." As IVMS students master the ability to become responsible for their education, they are given more freedom to make choices. It is this process that will prepare a student most usefully for adult life.

Integrating responsibility and the freedom to choose with the arts and foreign language, provide a well-rounded preparation for both high school and college. For those students not going on to college, these abilities will support success in vocational careers as well. Most of all, students will learn to be the actor in their own lives rather than wait for life to happen to them. This is probably the most important lesson of all.

"If education is to be an aid to civilization, it cannot be carried out by emptying the schools of knowledge (wisdom), of character, of discipline, of social harmony, and, above all, of freedom." - Maria Montessori

Remembering the Original Vision

Island Village Montessori...     the first Charter
Montessori School
in Sarasota County

Island Village Montessori School opened its doors on August 13, 2001 to 175 students as the first charter Montessori school in Sarasota County.

In 2001, our vision was to create a public Montessori elementary program open to all children regardless of income, race, or ethnic background.

A History of Our School

  • In 2001, we also opened an early childhood program to serve children from the age of three, serving 35 children.

  • In 2003, we partnered with Children First to give a Montessori opportunity to families not able to afford a private tuition before kindergarten.

  • In 2005, we elected to participate in Florida's Voluntary Pre-K program to help families afford the cost of the four year-old year.

  • In 2005, we opened a middle school on our Venice campus as well as satellite Montessori programs in Sarasota.

  • In 2005, we began developing an online teacher training program for Montessori teachers called Montessori Live.

  • In 2005, we began developing a student tracking program for Montessori schools called Montalign.

  • In 2007, we have over 500 students in our programs combined.

What is the Vision of IVMS Today?

  • Developing public Montessori programs open to all children regardless of income, race, or socio-ethnic background.
  • Working toward the highest standards in public and Montessori education.
  • Being a model of responsible leadership for the community; sharing best practice with the world through affordable professional development programs.
  • Creating a school of optimal size where a sense of family makes students feel safe, and will not allow them to fall between the cracks; where families choose a point of view rather than simply attending a school.
  • Becoming a community where individuals are equally important and where differences are respected; creating a sense of belonging for all.
  • Connecting children to their civilization through the Montessori cosmic curriculum; training gardeners of the human potential who contribute to a peaceful world.
  • Working with students to foster independence, self-motivation, self-discipline, creativity, responsibility, citizenship, autonomy, competence, tolerance, and kindness.
  • Treating education as a holistic journey of self-discovery; establishing patterns for lifelong learning; focusing on the process of learning.
  • Developing sister schools worldwide in an effort to make cultural studies real to our students. Our school currently has partnership with schools in Vladimir, Russia and Perpignan, France through the Sister Cities program.

School Grades Released

For 2006-07, Island Village Montessori elementary program received a grade of A in the Florida A+ program. This is the third year our elementary school has received an A. Our elementary program made Adequate Yearly Progress under No Child Left Behind for the third year in a row as well. We met AYP in 100% of required areas. AYP is a difficult standard to meet. A school must show improvement or high performance in over 30 areas to receive this designation.

Last year, our middle school received a grade of B. The middle school made Adequate Yearly Progress under No Child Left Behind in 100% of required areas. This year, the middle school missed the B grade by only 5 points, and received a C. The middle school made AYP in 95% of all areas.

Last year was a challenging year for our middle school program. Our middle school principal was notified of a call into active duty right after school began at the end of August. For two months she was not sure when she would be leaving or where she would be stationed. She had to leave our school in November. Although we are proud that she is serving the country, the timing of her leaving and the staff changes that followed were traumatic events for our school. We lost time during the first semester due to these transitions that came so unexpectedly and quickly. Although we got our bearings during the second semester, the testing was already upon us.

To take the scores in the spirit in which they were intended, as a diagnostic tool, we have examined what happened last year and have made changes, especially in the area of mathematics. Our reading and writing scores were quite positive, but our students did not make the progress they needed to make in math overall by the FCAT testing in March. They did make progress by the end of the year because we scheduled extra time for math practice during the entire second semester.

Our north campus did not receive a grade because our population was too small this year.

As a Montessori school, we are proud to be able to show you, our parents, that we can compete with neighboring district schools and be able to maintain our commitment to the arts and holistic education. I hope this will help those of you who wonder whether or not your child is keeping up in a Montessori school.

It is one of the guiding principles of our school to design a model of a high performing Montessori school; a school that can adhere to the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori advising us to "follow the child" and simultaneously hold children to high standards of learning.

My congratulations to our teachers as well as to our students for a job well done. My congratulations to you, our parents, for your care and concern that your child receives the best educational experience possible.

Kym Elder
Executive Director
